How to start your yoga journey in 2023
Thinking about trying yoga for the first time? Here are a few tips & tricks on how to start out on your yoga journey.
New to Yoga? Nowadays, there are so many different styles of Yoga. We have access to Power, Rocket, Vinyasa, Hatha, Yin and Restorative classes (just to name a few). This abundance of choice can be overwhelming, so here are my tips...
1. Try different styles of yoga and different studios
You might not always click with the first style you try or the studio you attend but that doesn't mean yoga isn't for you!
2. Take a 1:1 class
Taking part in a few 1:1 classes before going to a studio class can help you to get to grips with the basics.
3. Leave your ego at the door
Set an intention before practise to let go of your ego and be fully present on the mat. Your yoga practise is for you, so don't compare yourself to the person next to you. Complex asanas will come when you let go of expectations and surrender to time and practise.
4. Listen to your body
Move in a way that honours what your body needs in this present moment.
5. Find peace in stillness
We are very overstimulated in everyday life, so it can be hard to switch off in poses like savasana at the end of class. Returning back to your breath is always helpful in moments when your mind has wandered.
6. Go to workshops
Workshops are a great way to get a deeper insight into the practise and learn new skills.
7. Learn about yoga philosophy
Yoga is far more than the physical asana. Learning more about the history and philosophy of yoga will enrich your yoga practise. A great place to start is Patanjali's Eight Limbs of Yoga.
